I figured this would be a good 友 for the drama thread.

Besides the typical "everyone knows about them" Japanese movies like Seven Samurai, Mononoke Hime, Spiritied away... yadda yadda, what movies would you recommend looking into? Also, why?

I was talking to Chris lately about some semi-crazy Japanese movies and it got me to wondering what other movies might be worth checking out.

One I'm going to take a peak at (which is semi-Japanese Movie ish I guess) is the Great Happiness movie about male hostess clubs. It is a documentary but looks interesting. I saw 10 minutes of it on google video and it was quite interesting (although a bit depressing)

竜が如く!

It's a yakuza movie based off of the famous ps2 game...and good way to learn how to talk like MAN(incomprehensible mumbling)

They do a damn better job at staying true to the original storyline than America does.

I think 12 year olds from Zimbabwe could do a better job sticking to a storyline than US film studios. It seems that they want to put their own "artistic vision" on top of another one already established... so they just butcher it and repiece it together Frankenstein-style without the "coming to life" aspect.

I have Tokyo Gore Police but I still haven't gotten to watch it. I think I also have part of Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge. Oh yeah, Machine Girl was great too.

I watched Tokyo Gore Police and was kinda surprised at how nationalistic and racist it was....

Anyway, when you see it, you'll see. lol

Besides that, Aputee ninja women! Awesome!!!

Speaking of Machine Girl, has anyone seen the trailer to RoboGeisha?? It's from the same makers, and it looks just as awesome.
Watch it here!

As far as recent movies I've seen, these movies tickled my fancy:
Always Sunset on Third Street...for the drama.
Noroi...for it's departure from typical J-Horror
Okuribito...for it's soundtrack and touching story.

lol just saw that trailer recently and was talking with Chris about it. One of the most absurd trailers I've seen in... maybe ever.

I'll have to check into the Noroi movie maybe... if it is different, it sounds like it could be very interesting.

I almost never watch Japanese movies, but I did really like 青の炎 aka The Blue Light, which is a bit of an older movie starring Nino from Arashi, who has been known for his acting pretty much forever. It's about violence and abuse, pretty much, so it's not a happy movie, but it's really good.

I'm also waiting for a dvd rip of Yatterman to show up online, cuz I've been wanting to watch that like no other. I kept hearing about it when it came out in Japan (because it, um, stars another member of Arashi...don't judge me...) and apparently it's pretty funny. Based off some old anime from the '70s or something.

That movie sounds like something I'd like since it is social issue related... but it does sound awfully depressing lol

It is, but I dunno, it was so good that I was okay with it being depressing, haha. It won some award or something, I think.

Depressing is fine if it is good, a good movie doesn't have to be happy and if that was a prereq I wouldn't watch any movies probably!

I saw a list of the top Korean movies that was posted by a friend on facebook lately, most of them looked fairly "deep" in the sense that you have to be a state of preparedness to watch them or it just drags you down XD Sometimes things can be a bit too much depending on the time you watch them.

Did you watch that movie yet, Brian? I'm curious as to what you think of it.

But yes. Like the drama, A Million Stars Fall from the Sky. I was NOT prepared for the ending of that drama, and I was kind of traumatized. lol

I don't have lots of movie recs (since I don't watch movies often), but I have TONS of dramas I can rec if you want. ^^ I have a whole list of dramas I've watched~ Of course, you definitely wouldn't like all of them, haha. My biggest rec to people is this, though: Anything with Kimura Takuya. (Shar and Gemma will second this. XD)
